Heidi found herself at the shelter after spending her entire life being a breeding machine…..she is 8 – 9 years old and just wants a chance to live out her life cuddling next to her human and getting lots of treats! She is a total sweetheart….all 14 lbs of her. She is hard of hearing and her teeth have been neglected so she will have a dental while she is being spayed next week. Although she’s a little older, she deserves a wonderful home with a soft, fluffy bed and lots of love!
Several weeks ago we were contacted about two cocker spaniels who needed rescuing immediately as their owner had a heart attack and could no longer keep them. The owner had moved out of the house, convalescing with relatives, and could not take them with him, so the two girls were left in the home. The person looking after the dogs had to leave town and was going to have to leave them behind. We went to the house and found the girls filthy and flea-infested since they had not been cared for in awhile. They were scared and didn’t know what was going on when we loaded them in our car. Expecting the worse, we were pleasantly surprised that they warmed up to us quickly and let us bathe and groom them. They were not eating well when we first got them because they were used to table scraps, but they are eating good quality dog food now! Piper, the black and white girl has found her forever home, but Reese, a beautiful 1 year old chocolate/tan tri girl is still looking.
If you are looking for a sporty dog for an active family, Talley’s your girl! Talley is very friendly and loves to play with her foster sisters. She is young and active, loves to chase squirrels, but settles down nicely in the house when she’s ready to “chill.” Talley is a real beauty with her dark chocolate coat. She is about 2 yrs old and will be ready to go to her forever home right after Thanksgiving…..I’m sure Talley will be thankful to have her own family!

The story begins on Thursday the 26th, when two faculty members at TSU called HCSR to help in retrieving a stray cavalier mix. It had been roaming the campus for over a month and became known as Elizabeth Taylor. Everyone from the students, police, maintenance, faculty and staff tried to catch it. With no luck, everyone resorted to just making sure it got daily meals. Thursday was our first attempt to catch this little darling. Well… that proved to be unsuccessful fast as she turned out to be very smart in dodging any of our advances. So we tried again on Friday with some more help from friends, and running shoes:) Day 2 faired the no better as we were not able to catch her. Leaving very disappointed, we brainstormed all night on some creative ideas to trick this little speed racer. We came even more prepared on day 3 with more equipment and on our bikes! Third time’s the charm…right? Well it was… as we caught it!! Turns out “it” was a lovely little girl! No one knew because no one could get close enough. She was beyond frightened but surprisingly was VERY sweet and did not even try to bite us. As we let her calm down and realize what had just happened…she seemed to pick up on the fact she was caught and we were good people. We untangled her from the netting, slipped on a leash and went on our merry way! High fiving each other nonetheless… we were so pumped!! First thing we did was take her over to Harry’s dog wash to get her all cleaned up. She was covered in fleas, lots of mats and she smelled like a homeless bum. By the way, through the whole process, she was such a sweetheart and just took it all in stride. The rest of the day we spent at home hanging out and playing. She absolutely had to have some part of her 22-pound body touching us. She loved the affection. Chloe would like to thank HCSR (especially Ana and Derick) for all their help in trying to catch her and she is sorry for being so difficult:)
That’s not all… Chloe (real name “Hanna”) has been reunited with her owner! Thanks to her microchip, we were able to contact her Dad. He was very happy and relieved that his little companion had been found….she had escaped out of his yard about 6 weeks ago. She’s a curious little thing and wanted to explore but never made it back home. Hanna was happy to see her Dad and wagged her tail as we all called her by her real name:) What an emotional adventure!
Houston Cocker Spaniel Rescue had a very successful weekend at the Reliant Dog Show! We raised lots of money for the cockers and rounded up some potential homes for some of our babies. We even snagged a few new volunteers!
Here is the list of winners of our raffle:
Interesting note: Alex Brown, who won the iPad, bought 1 raffle ticket, so it only takes one to win!!!
Jodi has a sad story…..we were contacted by the Montgomery County shelter that they had a cocker turned in by her owner because he could no longer take care of her. Found out that Jodi belonged to an 87-year old man. Jodi seemed depressed at first and constantly looked for her master, not realizing what had happened. She’s doing much better now and learning to be more trusting. She loves men, probably because her owner was a man, and now she’s decided that women aren’t too bad either, especially if they feed her! Jodi is 7 years old and would be best in an all-adult home. She is happy just to sit around and watch TV with you and appears to be housetrained, which is a plus! Can you give Jodi a home she can call hers for Thanksgiving? She would be ever so thankful!
